Before you rent a car in Fiji, you will need to remember to drive on the left-hand side of the road and overtake on the right. All car passengers must keep seatbelts on at all times when you are driving, and mobile phone use is prohibited. Drinking and eating while driving is also prohibited.
You have to be 21 years or older to rent a car in Fiji, and you must have possessed your driver’s license for at least two years. If you are under 25 years old, you may incur a surcharge per the young driver regulation. When you are driving, you are required to carry a valid driver’s license, registration, and insurance papers with you at all times.
When you rent a car in Fiji, you will find that the price of petrol is around 2.04 FJD (0.95 USD) per liter. You will discover that there are plenty of petrol stations in the major towns, but there are not many in rural areas. Many of the petrol stations are full-service and do not accept credit cards, so it is a good idea to carry cash when filling up your tank. Petrol is also available at village shops in the more remote areas.
The speed limits in Fiji vary depending on the type of roads you’re driving on. The maximum speed limit for residential areas is 50 km/h (31 mph), while outside of residential and urban areas, the limit increases to 80 km/h (50 mph). There are both mobile and fixed speed cameras along the Queen’s Highway and in certain areas near Suva.
