Always drive your rental car in Cambodia on the right side of the road and only use a hands-free mobile device to avoid fines. The use of rear seat belts is not mandated by law in Cambodia, but you should buckle up any minor passengers as a safety precaution. Additionally, any child under four years of age must be transported in a child seat. Pedestrian and motorcycle traffic are heavy in major city centers like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Expect increased volumes of traffic congestion during the summer months, and be wary of pedestrians, motorcycles, and bicycles as you go.
The minimum age to rent a car in Cambodia is 21, and “young drivers” fees usually apply to any customer under 25 years of age. Young drivers are also restricted from renting vehicles like premium SUVs or luxury cars. Be sure to present your passport, return ticket, and valid driver’s license at the agency office along with your booking details if you’ve made an advanced reservation.
You should expect to pay approximately 5,300.000 KHR (1.30 USD) per liter and about 20,060.00 KHR (5 USD) per gallon of gasoline at the pump in Cambodia. If you’re driving a diesel car or van, the prices per liter are 5,000.000 KHR (1.20 USD), and per gallon 18,930.000 KHR (4.60 USD) are slightly less. In either case, gas prices in Cambodia are considerably cheaper than in many places in the U.S.
Speed limits in Cambodia are posted in kilometers per hour (km/h), so here’s a handy conversion chart for U.S. motorists who are more familiar with miles per hour (mph). The maximum speed on national highways is 120 km/h, or 75 mph, but on roads through rural districts, the limit is 80 km/h (50 mph), and 40 km/h (25 mph) is required when driving through populated districts or commercial zones. Traffic cameras can be found on highways and in downtown areas, so observe speed limits at all times.
