Lefkada is definitely suited to a car hire tour. The beaches, the villages and the mountains all offer their own attractions, but getting between them all can be complicated when travelling by public transport. If you are the kind of tourist that likes to be free to change your schedule or divert to an unexpected location, then car hire on Lefkada will be a better option. There are lots of hiking trails in the mountains as well as waterfalls and forests that are easily reached by road. Food is also a big attraction here, and there are some very special restaurants dotted around the island, especially on the coast, that you may want to visit; but this would be hard via local transport.

Driving on Lefkada is enjoyable, but drivers not used to Greece need to stay alert. There are a lot of motorbikes and scooters, some driven by locals and some driven by tourists, so you need to watch for them. The mountain roads can sometimes be perilous, too, if you are not experienced in driving on mountain roads; but they take you to amazing places, so it's worth it. The road surface is generally good, but it can turn to rough track without a great deal of warning in the more rural areas. The GPS won’t always pick up on this, so be alert for changing road conditions. There will also be slow-moving agricultural traffic, so watch for these, too. There are no motorways or toll roads - only minor roads.

You need to be 21 years or older to hire a car in Greece. You also need to have held your licence for at least a year. All drivers under 25 will have to pay a daily surcharge, and this may be extended to older drivers from the age of 70. You can drive in Greece on a UK or EU driving licence, but if your licence is written in a script other than Latin, then it’s advised that you get an international driving permit.
